The temple that we know today was built over the Gothic style church in 1515, which in turn was built over the Romanic church, destroyed by fire in 1434 and the primitive Mozarab chapel. It was constructed from 1681 onwards over plans by Felipe Sanchez and Herrera, “el Mozo”. It also underwent later interventions by Ventura Rodríguez, who is responsible for the Holy Chapel, the succession of domes and the towers finished in the mid 20th century. It is therefore an impressive building in whose interior we can contemplate the Renaissance altarpiece by Damián Forment and the fresco painting of the Regina Martyrum Dome by Goya, works of art that form a part of a magnificent space dedicated to the tradition and devotion of the Virgin of Pilar.
